Let me explain how stress works…

The best way to understand “stress” is to think of it as a two-part process:

  1. First, you encounter a “stressor” (the challenging people, events and situations in your life – the things that happen to you),
  2. Then, you automatically respond to the stressor with your “stress reaction” (anxiety, anger, frustration, tension, etc - your feeling of stress).

Every time you run up against a difficult situation that triggers a negative emotion such as anxiety or self-doubt or frustration, a little bit (or sometimes a lot) of stress is created in your system. Usually it takes awhile for these feelings and the associated physical effects to dissipate.

But, if you keep on running into stress-triggering situations – such as an unresolved situation that keeps on cropping up, or a difficult person or relationship that keeps on creating new problems – then, your stress baggage piles up… like junk in a junky closet.

Now, you can spend your time piling up the stress followed by periodic junk clearing with the stress relievers, but it’s a vicious cycle… and eventually the demands of your situation increase to the point that you stop doing the stress relievers… and all of a sudden you’re not sleeping, or suffering from some other stress symptom.

What I Learned About Stress From a Man
Who Fell Off the Ferry... and Survived
in the Ocean for Over 8 Hours!

A friend of mine, Bob, lost his footing on the ferry and fell overboard on his way from Victoria, BC to Vancouver. Panic-stricken, Bob cried for help as he thrashed about in the water without a life jacket trying to attract someone's attention…
